Harpagophytum, commonly known as Devil's Claw, is a plant native to southern and eastern Africa, particularly the Kalahari desert and the steppes of Namibia.
The plant is nicknamed Devil's Claw because of the hard, clawed bracts that protect the fruit. These hooks are very hard and can cause injury to the feet of animals grazing in these steppes. The roots of this plant go deep into the soil. From these roots come secondary roots which have beneficial properties.
They are rich in glyco-iridoids which have remarkable anti-inflammatory, analgesic and blood circulation stimulating properties.
The administration of Harpagophytum is indicated in horses suffering from musculoskeletal disorders such as osteoarthritis, joint and tendon problems, particularly in sport horses, but a horse that is a little stiff will also benefit from its benefits. Harpagophytum is the natural replacement for NSAIDs.
Do not administer to pregnant mares.
